Griffens are legendary animals being formed in the Second Age as a gift for the skies by The New Gods. They have a lion's hindquarters and an eagle's legs and front talons. Its eagle's head conventionally possess prominent ears; these are sometimes described as the lion's ears, but are often elongated (more like a horse's), and are sometimes feathered. Their predators are few in number but include Dragons, Elder Races, and Fell Beasts. They eat and bunt just about anything they can get their talons into. Unlike dragons although highly intelligent Griffins are not capable of complex thinking such as that of Men. Though they have been known to communicate with each other and learn new things quickly. Griffins will sometimes form groups called Flocks led by a mature female. These groups number no more than 6-7 and are rare. In most cases Griffins remain in pairs or as individuals.
Because the lion was traditionally considered the king of the beasts and the eagle the king of birds, the griffin was thought to be an especially powerful and majestic creature. Griffins not only mate for life, but if either partner dies, then the other wi continue the rest of its life alone, never to search for a new mate. A Griffin's claw was believed to have medicinal properties and one of its feathers could restore sight to the blind. Griffins are the located throughout Armeniá and although just as predatory as Dragons they are not considered as dangerous. They are often found on the Arms of many Nobles and are considered to represent strength, loyalty and Freedom.
