Date: 3E 640 Journal Entry 213
(This document has been preserved and recovered by the Bard Company of Ivan the Lizard as documentation on the life of Peasants in a feudal society. It is remarkable as most Serfs are unable to write or read, so as to how this one was able we shall never know.)
The days seem to grow shorter and shorter, and with it so does the warmth leave us. Winter is coming, and Father Andrew promises that it shall be a rough one. The Lord as such has doubled the normal crop tax, taking half of our harvest. Damn Ser Johric, how am I supposed to feed my family? I have already lost two sons to the wars with Avalon and one daughter to plague. Now the Lord calls my third and last son Siegfried to be his Forester? The boy is hardly 15, and though the best bowmen in all the county he is needed here. I cannot be expected to carry out the harvest on my own. Does he expect me to purchase workers? What with my whole 20 Silver Dragons?
Our land, or the lords land rather consists of 7 acres of farmland and two wooden buildings our storage shed and our small house. Barley enough room for two people but I'm forced to fit 2 young boys, Siegfried, my Wife and my two daughters. Winters are cold and hard, sometimes though the Lord will bring down extra food stuffs and even allow us to fall trees in his woods. Sometimes I wonder what it would be like if I was up on that Manor, though that life is too distant for me to even imagine. The Lords sheriff has called a town gathering together, so I shall attend along with the other 49 Elders. The Lord no doubt wishes to hear out thoughts on the extra tax, maybe there will even be a court with criminals judged. Though that's unlikely, lately the Lord himself has seen fit to impose justice without a jury. No this is likely about the tax, to which all will give the false reply that they are happy with the Lords rule. Anyway I guess this is all I have for today. I shall try to write more tommorow but with winter coming I'll probably be busy reinforcing the house and collecting wood.
